AIR INDIA IS DISGUSTING! EPIC FAIL.

READ THIS. This is a phone conversation I just had with an Air India employee (a mistake, to begin with). Mind you, I have polished her English a little bit:

"Hi, I need to book a ticket from Mumbai to Denver."
"Denver?"
"Yes. Denver, Colorado. In USA. I need one for July. Anywhere between 7th and 17th of July. Whichever is least expensive."
"Ok sir. [long pause] What date sir?"
"Any day between 7th and 17th of July."
"Is it one-way or return ticket?"
"One-way"
"Ok sir, let me look." [long hold] "Yes sir we have a flight to New York. From there to langarda (?! - that's supposed to be LaGuardia - she wants me to 'go' from NY to LaGuardia!). And from there to Denmark."
"I'm sorry, Denmark?!? You mean Denver, right?"
"Yes sir, Danvar. Sir I can only give you rough fare sir."
"What do you mean rough fare? Why rough fare? I need a specific fare."
"Sir because Air India is only till New York. After that you have to go in another flight."
"Which is the connecting airline?"
"American Airlines sir."
"Okay, I see. What's the fare?"
"Sir it's Rs. xx,xxx."
"Okay, what date is this for?"
"I put in May sir... Sir what date did you ask for?"
"What date did you search for??"
"Sir I put in May."
"Ma'am, I specifically told you July! 7th to 17th July."
"Yes sir, I put in July."
"Whaat? What are you saying?"
"Yes sir, I put in one-way for May and return in July. Sir this is rough fare sir."
"I told you I need one-way!! Madam, are you even listening to me??"
[BEEEEEEEEEP]

SHE HUNG UP! SHE HUNG UP ON ME! AFTER GIVING ME THAT CRAP! %#@^@#!#%!!!

Now that I think about it, it's good she hung up. Else I would've tracked her down and STRANGLED HER. Lame-ass shit.

i hate to say it, but this is why i'm really anti outsourcing. it's about quality. even for something as simple as customer service: it matters. i wouldn't let someone in India answer our support email :(

on a related note, you should check out the movie "Outsourced." It was surprisingly funny:

U still flying with Air India!?!? I dumped them in 1988... never again. The only thing they're good at is giving us a "whiff" of India (u get what I mean)... All "Air" not Sh*t

Sachin, I agree check out the film... a bit more realistic...

Sachin, while I totally get what you mean, I wouldn't generalize it to outsourcing altogether. The problem, like you mentioned, is the lack of focus on quality. Many companies don't realize that outsourcing to 'cheap' firms will ultimately cost them a lot more money than they think they're saving. If they focus on quality, outsourcing can still save them some money.

@JPM - I was *thinking* of flying with Air India. Thankfully I learned my lesson without going any further :)

P.S. -  I will check out that movie indeed, thanks!

Someone needs retraining very very badly ^^;;

It is the kind of experience that makes you want to fork out more money just to be free from dealing with bad service.

Fly with Singapore Airlines :)

Singapore Airlines is my favouritest. Unfortunately, it's way more expensive than some of the other fares I'm getting.

I'm leaning towards Continental; it's turning out to be the quickest and most reasonable. Anyone know how the airline compares with Singapore Air?

Funny :)  , sorry, can’t help laughing on the irony of the situation. It happens only in India. The biggest problem is they hire people who are not even trained to manage or do the job- forget about qualification.

Two things I always do when I have to talk to customer care guys- ask their complete name., incase they mess up my work- I know whom to catch. Point-2 if I get a feeler they are not comfortable conversing in English request them to talk in hindi, if they can do that at all, to make it easier for both.

I use Emirates, Gulfair is horrible. Jet Air & Qatar Airways seem to be value for money. The best thing about Emirates is online booking... no hassle, check the dates, get your eticket and get going!

I'm sure you haven't been at the wrong end of a conversation with a BA or Air France customer support 'executive'...no low-down desi riffraff...no sir, sitting here, in your beloved land of the free (and lest we forget, home of the brave). Believe you me sir, your interaction with the desi who forgot to roll her 'r' while pronouncing Denver, will seem like a conversation with your favourite aunty over chai and biscuits.
But then, let's continue with the Air India bashing...:-)
